Holland Twp. woman’s attacker pleads no contest
Jason Matthew Kapala. Ottawa County Jail
HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A Ludington man, 30-year-old Jason Matthew Kapala, is facing a life-in-prison sentence for a violent attack on a Holland Township woman in December.
Kapala assaulted and imprisoned his girlfriend in her Holland Township apartment over two days, just before Christmas last year, according to the Holland Sentinel.
The woman showed up at the hospital for treatment of multiple injuries on Jan. 4, according to The Sentinel. Police later learned the woman’s 6-year-old child was with her during the incident, but physically unharmed.
Kapala pleaded no contest to multiple felonies and being a habitual offender. Because of the habitual offender charge, he faces up to life in prison, with costs and fines up $32,000. As part of the plea deal, criminal sexual assault charges were dropped. He was convicted of criminal sexual assault in 2009.
He’s scheduled to return to 20th Circuit Court Judge Jon Hulsing’s courtroom on June 18 for sentencing and remains in Ottawa County Jail.
Though a no contest plea indicates the peson charged is not admitting guilt in the matter, courts use sentencing guidelines for guilty pleas.
